Sylvia Griffin, Artist in Residence, May 2026

During her residency at KHF in May 2026, Sylvia Griffin continues her artistic research into the histories and cultures embedded in specific sites. Her work at Künstlerhof Frohnau focuses on the nearby former border landscape, particularly the watchtower and the area marking the course of the Berlin Wall, located only 500 metres from KHF.

Under the working title “The Scars of Division”, Griffin’s project reflects on the lasting traces of geopolitical separation and the universal trauma produced by divisive structures. It draws attention to processes of “othering” and to the impact such systems have on civilians marked as belonging to the wrong political or ideological side.

The work will develop gradually during her time on site. Griffin plans to create small silicone impressions around the former Berlin Wall area, which will later be used for bronze casting. She will also experiment with cyanotype printing on paper and fabric, capturing ephemeral aspects of the landscape, including the plant life that has regrown in the area. In addition, she intends to produce natural dyes and pigments from these plants for textile-based installations.
